Putnam, Connecticut

Putnam Meadow Solar Station is a 4.4 MWDC project, located in Putnam, Connecticut

The project is sited on secluded, privately owned land, connecting to an existing Eversource power-line. The power will be sold to Eversource at competitive rates, and delivered to local ratepayers using the Shared Clean Energy Facility (“SCEF”) Program.

The project will use bifacial solar panels, which generate electricity from both sides, and racks that track the sun’s transit throughout the day. Both technologies help increase energy generation.

The site will be purchased from a local landowner who has owned the property for many years.

Putnam Meadow Solar Station is expected to begin construction in 2024. Once operational the project will generate emission free electricity for decades, offsetting over 180,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions over forty years. In the first year of service, emissions avoided by Putnam Meadow Solar Station will equal the carbon sequestered by 9.5 square miles of forest.

Project updates

The Project will petition to the Connecticut Siting Council for a declaratory ruling that a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need is not required for the construction, maintenance and operation of the facility. The petition filing is expected in August, 2022.

Permit APPLICATION

PPA APPROVED

On November 18, 2021, the Connecticut Light and Power Company dba Eversource Energy entered into an agreement to purchase the energy from the Project. The agreement was approved by the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

PPA SELECTION

Putnam Meadow Solar Station was selected by Eversource on July 30, 2021, to enter an energy contract.

community

Putnam Meadow Solar Station will be a model for good solar development. The project will preserve Putnam's natural resources while allowing the local generation of affordable and reliable clean energy.

Glenvale will work with neighbors and town staff to minimize avoid any impacts. Do you have a suggested good cause that you think Glenvale can support? Please let us know.

We intend to use a pollinator friendly seedmix that will help establish pollinator habitat. The project will preserve the habitat with a buffer of native plantings.

environment

The site is ideal for a modern renewable energy power plant, avoiding impact to critical natural resources. The project will not be visible from the nearby Airline Trail and will be screened along River Road. The project will improve the area’s natural resources by providing acres of cultivated habitat for pollinators. Due to the decline in pollinators, this will be a critical benefit.

Putnam Meadow Solar Station is located on land currently managed for seed corn and timber harvesting. No new transmission lines will be constructed.

Putnam Meadow Solar Station will generate an estimated 6,970 megawatt hours of emission free energy in its first operating year; that’s enough to power 794 typical Connecticut homes. Over the first forty-years of operation, the project will generate 255,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy, and avoid the emission of 180,000 tons of carbon dioxide. The energy generated by Putnam Meadow Solar Station will be delivered to the Eversource local distribution system using existing infrastructure, and used by local ratepayers.

Economic impact

The project will be a critical source of employment and property taxes for Putnam. We expect to generate over thirty construction jobs at peak employment.

The project will be a major tax-payer in Putnam.

Local residents and business will have contracting and employment opportunities.
